Rookwood Sound is a dedicated health and wellbeing radio service, initially established as a hospital radio station back in 1987. Whilst only being available in a hospital initially, the station ran a successful 28 day RSL which recieved positive feedback.

Until 2023, the service was only available within the grounds of Llandough Hospital, where the service is broadcast from. On 31st October 2023, as it celebrated its 36th anniversary, Rookwood Sound launched on DAB covering Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

With the station growing into a health and wellbeing service for the wider community, it retains its Hospital grassroots, identifying the need for a service that has proven beneficial in lifting patients’ moods and aiding in their recovery. Whilst focusing on health and wellbeing, the station has had a long-standing commitment to local sport, with its service providing coverage of every Cardiff City home game for over 30 years.

Key Highlights:

• Launched on SSDAB as a health and well-being-focused radio service
• Developed links with NHS staff and service users to undertake volunteer recruitment and retention
• Developed a training programme to increase live programming during weekdays and weekends
• Installed its app on 400 iPads for use across the Health Board, increasing access to the service within the hospital
